Oral Hygiene - Periodontal Treatment - Mouthguards
Poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, or Gingivitis, which can cause Periodontitis if untreated. Periodontitis involves an inflammation of the gums and bone loss, and if not treated can also lead to tooth loss.
Research shows that this can contribute to the development of heart disease, diabetes, premature birth and increase the risk of stroke. It can also pose a serious threat to those with health problems such as diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis1.
Inadequate oral health can also affect your overall health as bacteria from the gums can enter the blood stream and travel to major organs, starting new infections.
Cleaning teeth correctly can help to remove bacterial plaque. This can be done by maintaining a thorough oral hygiene routine which includes:
- Brushing twice a day
- Flossing daily
- 6 monthly preventive care/active maintenance appointments with a hygienist, who specialises in the removal of bacteria under the gum. A professional clean will also remove the hard build up of plaque that even regular cleaning cannot remove.
